The success of the first Gumballs and Overalls in Michigan and owner Tammy Hicks recent marriage to Brandon based Army Reserve Quintin Hicks has led to the second location of the children’s clothing boutique in Valrico. Planning since last summer, Tammy relocated, married and opened the second store in just three weeks thanks to the help of her two daughters, college students Jessica Newman and Tiffany Hill.
At Gumballs and Overalls, outfitting a child from newborn to size eight will feel more like a field trip than a to-do list item. Gift ideas for baby showers, birthdays, Christenings and random occasions are endless with brand name clothes like GAP and Ralph Lauren, six independent designer clothing lines and the special touches of handmade items from blankets to bibs, rattles to ring slings.
“When I shop, I like quality clothes at a discounted price and I thought, I can do the same for children,” explained Tammy of where the idea came from. “I buy wholesale and then I discount,” she added of how she prices her items which afford customers anywhere between 30-60 percent off a retail price.
The handcrafted items from vendors ranging from age 20-87, most of them moms who never pictured their items worth much in a retail sense. “It is a unique twist to the store. So many moms don’t have the option to sell their stuff,” Tammy said.
The hot ticket item in this area has been the cloth diapers, of which Gumballs and Overalls has eight different lines including even the laundry soap to wash them in. Gumballs and Overalls is located in Valrico’s Lithia Crossing Plaza at 3468 Lithia Pinecrest Rd.
