As part of its mission to support the community and improve education for students, the Riverview Woman’s Club will host a Country Shindig fundraiser to raise money for college scholarships for high school seniors who are residents of Riverview. The Country Western-themed dinner, dance and games will take place on Friday, April 12 from 6-10 p.m. at the Winthrop Barn, located at 11349 Bloomingdale Ave. in Riverview.

The goal is to raise $3,000 to award three Riverview students $1,000 each who will graduate from a public high school in 2014 and attend a two or four-year college or university in Florida. In the short time since the Riverview Woman’s Club formed in 2012, the organization has awarded $4,000 in scholarship money to students who have demonstrated high academic achievement, community service, leadership skills and financial need.

President Jeanne Burkeson, who founded the organization, says the group is well on its way to achieving its mission and purpose. Burkeson said, “The Riverview Woman’s Club was founded for the purpose of getting to know our neighbors, to learn about our respective businesses, to enrich the quality of life in our community through a variety of cultural projects and programs, and to support the education of our children by providing college scholarships for local students.”

For the upcoming Country Shindig, guests are encouraged to wear country attire and show off their cowboy and cowgirl duds. Donations for raffle prizes and sponsors are being sought, which range from $275 for an Annie Oakley sponsorship that includes a reserved table for eight and recognition at the dinner, to $200 for the Dale Evans Sponsor that covers a full range of print and digital advertising and dinner for two, and the Buckaroo Sponsor which covers dinner for one and recognition at the event. Individual ticket prices are $30 each or two for $50.

The Country Shindig will feature a full country dinner buffet complete with BBQ pork, grilled chicken, fixings, iced tea and lemonade catered by Hungry Harry’s BBQ. Beer and wine will be available for a donation. Music will be provided by Music On The Move, a professional DJ service that will entertain guests with a mix of country and contemporary tunes and emcee the Square Dancing.
