Words like Big Gulp and Slurpee may take residents down memory lane, but many Riverview area residents and motorists whose daily travel routine includes Boyette Rd. will soon have a chance to enjoy such products a bit closer to their home
As the Boyette roadwork continues with much attention on the bridge over Bell Creek in Riverview, the fast moving construction of a brand new 7-Eleven gas station and 3,000 sq. ft. convenience store is nearing completion less than a mile up the road on the corner of Boyette and McMullen Rd.
With its future official address as 10016 McMullen Rd., the new 7-Eleven is scheduled to open late July, filling the once-vacant lot, making it the third of such stores within the vicinity.
According to 7-Eleven Corporate Communications Director, Margaret Chabris, the new store will have six multiple fuel pump dispensers with 12 fueling positions.
While most recognize some of its signature products, a bit of 7-Eleven trivia reveals that there are more than 50,200 units worldwide of which more than 10,100 are in North America. During 2011, 7-Eleven stores generated total worldwide sales close to $76.6 billion.
Founded in 1927 in Dallas, Texas, the company pioneered the convenience-store concept during its first years of operation as an ice company when its retail outlets began selling milk, bread and eggs as a convenience to customers.
Today, 7-Eleven is also said to be one of the nation’s largest independent gasoline retailers. The company’s name was changed from The Southland Corporation to 7-Eleven, Inc. after approval by shareholders on April 28, 1999.
The name 7-Eleven originated in 1946 when the stores were open from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m., however, today the store offers customers 24-hour convenience, seven days a week, which company officials say is the cornerstone of 7-Eleven’s business.
It is not surprising that July 11 (7/11) is the official birthday of the 7-Eleven convenience store chain, this year celebrating its 86th birthday.
