On Saturday, September 14, the Brandon League of Fine Arts announced the winners of ARTWORKS 2013 at Center Place in Brandon. ARTWORKS is open to the community each year. It is a juried art show and is held in conjunction with the Annual Gallery Hop.

This year’s show featured 63 works of art, including five sculptures. Elizabeth Kershaw, Chairperson of ARTWORKS 2013 said, “The caliber of the art this year is simply outstanding. I am very pleased with the quality of the show as it is excellent. There is a lot of diversity evident in this show.”

This year’s winners included Honorable Mention winners James McCarthy (“Garden In The Valley of Vining Vines”); and Judith Baizan (“Sport”). Third place went to Donna Morrison with “The Joanne.” Second place went to Anne Drewery and “Pierrot et Pierrette.” First place was awarded to Kathy Durdin with “Facing the Rising Sun.”

Durdin’s piece was painted from a photograph she took while visiting Williamsburg, VA. Durdin said, “I was shocked when I learned that I had been awarded first place. I am gratified that both composition and strength of the work was recognized.” Durdin explained that she did not use earth colors in the piece. “It is all transparent. This makes it bright,” said Durdin. Indeed, the piece is quite beautiful and stunning.

The Judge for ARTWORKS 2013 was Christine Reichow of Ft. Meyers. Reichow is a signature member of the National, American and Florida Watercolor Societies. Reichow said of the winning piece, “It is emotionally moving because it seems that the viewer is eavesdropping on the ladies’ conversation.” Reichow spent two hours reviewing all of the pieces and wished that she had at least 12 ribbons to award.
