After trying for the past three years, Apollo Beach resident, Billy Boyd, has finally reached his goal by winning the East Bay Sprints 2013 championship ahead of defending champion, Kerry Gilbert.

“I feel great that I have finally accomplished a goal I have set out to do for many years of racing,” Billy said while giving all credit of his much-deserved success to his family and race organization.

The event, held at East Bay Race Way Park in Riverview, welcomed hundreds of race fans along with family and friends, bringing the race season to an exciting and happy conclusion.

“I’m so proud of him,” said his wife and most avid supporter, Mary Boyd. “He has been racing since he was 13-years-old and has come close quite a few times, but ended up finishing second place.”

Billy, 42, leads his family in the sport, boasting of both his children taking not only interest in racing, but sporting plenty of success, which makes his own success that much sweeter.

“Our kids have both won championships, racing with the help of their dad,” Mary added. “Billy didn’t get the chance until now and I think recognizing his success is something special and nice to do for him.”

It is noteworthy that while the weather has played a big part in the East Bay Sprints this year, forcing a number of races to be rescheduled, it in fact fueled Billy’s determination to make the season his own.

During the race, Billy had reportedly led the pack with David Steele a close second, followed by Gilbert in third place.

As the checkered flag waved, Billy found himself in victory lane as the 2013 Sprint Car champion, followed by David Steele, Frank Beck, Kerry Gilbert and Kyle Pitts.

While celebrating his victory, Billy thanked the Aman’s family for their sponsorship and putting him behind the wheel of their car. He also thanked Maxim Chassis, Aggressive Racing Shocks, Kustom Sprint Car Supplies, Manikis Performance Parts, Gaerte Racing Engines and Ricky T’s.
