Brandon Eagles Cheerleaders Post UCA Summer Camp Success
Brandon High School Cheerleaders, coached by Nancy Reagor, had a chance to participate in the Universal Cheerleading Association (UCA) camp at Embry Riddle University in Daytona Beach earlier this month.
Proud of the Brandon High School cheer team’s performance, Reagor said that while at camp, the girls were awarded four trophies: 1st place for game day cheerleading; 1st place for most improved squad at camp; 2nd place for the cheer category and 3rd place for the dance category.
Haley Ann Johnson was selected as an All American Cheerleader and was given the chance to performing with UCA in London. She also received the “Pin it Forward” award for leadership.
The Brandon High School squad was also honored to win the coveted “Banana Award” and Spirit Stick from UCA, which is given to the school with the most school spirit.
BSAC to Host Dash and Splash
The Brandon Sports and Aquatic Center (BSAC) proudly announced it will be hosting the third annual Dash and Splash event on Saturday, September 13 at its facility located at 405 Beverly Blvd. in Brandon.
According to BSAC officials, the annual event, which will begin at 7:30 a.m., is an important event for both the Center as well as for the community.
“This event is in support of our Youth Drowning Prevention Initiative,” said Brandon Sports and Aquatic Center Director of Operations, Lori Bukaweski. “All proceeds will go toward providing swim lessons to families who cannot afford them.”
Bukaweski explained that Dash and Splash is a swimming/running timed event consisting of a 2 mile run, quarter mile swim and a 1 mile run for adults.
Of course, children are not left out of the activity-filled festivities. For children ages 7-10 the event will feature a half mile run, 100 meter swim, and children ages 11-14 will be able to take part in a 1 mile run, 200 meter swim.
Pre-race day registration prices are $25 for adults, $15 for children ages 7-10 and $20 for children ages 11-14. Registration will be available online at www.mybsac.org.
Those unable to attend the event can still support BSAC’s Youth Drowning Prevention Initiative by purchasing a T-shirt for $15 each from the Center promoting the event and its sponsors.
“We encourage athletes, non-athletes, children and adults of all ages to participate in this family oriented fun event,” Bukaweski said.

Tampa Bay Rhythmics Gymnastics End Season with Summer Camp, Boasts of New Elite Junior Gymnast
Tampa Bay Rhythmics Gymnastics, led by Owner and Head Coach Tyana Marlowe, was pleased to bring its competitive season to a close with its traditional week-long, end-of year-camp, showcasing its talented gymnasts, its standout stars as well celebrity supporters such as Rhythmic Gymnastics National Champion and 2012 Olympian Julie Zetlin.
For the second time in as many years, Zetlin has traveled from the west coast to spend a week with Marlowe’s girls sharing her coaching expertise and experience with the young gymnasts who hope to perhaps one day become Olympians themselves.
“It’s a pleasure to come back and spend another week with the girls here,” Zetlin said of the gym located at 6542 Krycul Ave. in Riverview.
During the camp, Zetlin enjoyed the company of 14-year-old Sydney Rhoads who has quickly grown into a junior elite level 10 gymnast with the potential to lead the competition entering the next phase of her athletic career. This year Rhodes qualified for the elite national championships and finished as the 16th best ranked junior in the country.
“I have been involved in this sport for over 30 years and Sydney’s quick success in this sport is a very rare occurrence,” Marlowe said. “This child has the Olympic potential.”
Under Marlowe’s continued guidance, Rhoads will now train to reach the elite status in the senior division.
“This sport is a great fit for me and I am looking forward to taking my abilities to the next level,” Rhoads said.
