From Homeless To State Certified Residential Contractor

From homeless to a state certified residential contractor, Eileen Burke has run the gamut of achievement in the housing industry. Burke, a special projects coordinator with Florida Home Partnership, Inc. (FHP), a non-profit community homebuilder, traveled a unique path that few can claim. With intentions of discarding a flyer she found in the parking lot of a local Walmart in 1994, Burke discovered a housing opportunity through FHP. The flyer was promoting the United States Department of Agriculture Self-help Housing Program for income eligible first-time homebuyers. Questioning the claim of “no money down and affordable payments,” Burke kept the notice and shared it with a co-worker. With reservations, they eventually applied and successfully enrolled in the program. Attending trainings and working nights and weekends to meet the minimum 600 hours of sweat-equity, the two helped build each other’s home, and the homes of the members in their group, and literally became next-door neighbors in the Homes for Ruskin community. As a proud new homeowner, Burke became an active member of the community’s homeowners’ association and serves as its president today.

Burke recently earned the State of Florida residential contractor’s license (May 2016), adding yet another impressive accomplishment to her full resume. For more information, call Florida Home Partnership at 672-7860 or email joey@flhome.org.
