Staff Report
Volunteers are needed on Saturday, June 10 from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. to help protect Tampa Bay. Bring your kayak, canoe, paddleboard, or motorboat to help remove litter and debris from the Hillsborough River Watershed. Of course volunteers are always needed to remove litter from the shoreline on foot too. Help preserve our beautiful waterways and improve our community by choosing from one of the locations below.
According to Debbie Evenson, Executive Director of Keep Tampa Bay Beautiful, “World Oceans Day is a global day of ocean celebration and collaboration for a better future. We are excited to celebrate World Oceans Day on June 10. Through this event and others like it that Keep Tampa Bay Beautiful coordinates, we are able to educate the community on the importance of putting waste in its place and the environmental impact of litter. The Tampa Bay watershed is the largest open-water estuary in Florida, making it an extremely fragile environment, easily influenced by damaging aquatic waste. Our goal is to encourage all citizens and businesses to help protect our most precious resource by preventing litter and debris from polluting the Hillsborough River and its tributaries, while becoming more aware of the value of clean, safe and sustainable waterways.”
The cleanup will take place at the following locations: Rick’s on the River – 2305 N Willow Ave. in Tampa, and Bermuda Blvd., 1507 S 22nd St. in Tampa. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. with a cleanup start time at 9 a.m. Don’t forget your sunscreen, hat, sunglasses and protective footwear (close-toed).
Keep Tampa Bay Beautiful will provide trash bags, water and soft gloves. Promotional giveaways available while supplies last. Join in for the After Party sponsored by Bud Light at Rick’s On the River from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
