Several local students who attend HCC Ybor City Campus were juried into the 44th Annual HCC Juried Student Art Show. These include Jamie Williams from Brandon with "Sick Inducing Dollar," Ashley Quesada from Riverview with "Natural Repetition" and Zuza Janczak from Lithia with "Apolonia."

The 44th Annual HCC Juried Art Show was held at the Ybor City Campus School of Visual and Performing Arts Gallery during the month of April. The show is sponsored by Las Damas De Arte who gives out $2500 in prize money.

Several students from the greater Brandon area participated in the show. These included Jamie Williams of Brandon who won Honorable Mention for the ceramic piece called “Sick Inducing Dollar.”

Ashley Quesada from Riverview won a Merit Award for “Natural Repetition” which is a Tesselation print.

Zuza Janczak from Lithia won a Merit Award for “Apolonia” a charcoal piece.

The show is a juried art show. This year there were over 160 entries. Students from all disciplines in the Visual Arts Department may enter the show. 60 of the entries were juried into the show. Students who entered the show were diverse in age. Older students who take courses not for credit are eligible to enter the show.

Works that were not accepted into the 44th Annual Student Show were selected for the Salon des Refusés that was also on exhibit in the Maze Student Art Gallery located in the Administration Building.

The juror for this year’s show was Katherine Pill, the Curator of Contemporary Art at the Fine Arts Museum in St. Petersburg. Pill said, “It is an honor to be asked to jury these artworks, and it is also a daunting undertaking. The process at some point inevitably becomes subjective, and I applaud all of the student applicants for exhibiting such diverse approaches to their art practices.”

Gallery Director, Carolyn Kossar said, “This year’s show is different. We usually have a lot of photographs. This year we have a lot of drawing.” Kossar added, “The artwork is more insightful. It is not political as it has been in the past, but I like the political statements.”

The HCC Ybor City Art Gallery is located on the first floor of the Performing Arts Building (YPAB) located at 1304 E. 11th Ave. (Palm Ave. and 15th St. in Tampa.
