Most people know Car Wash On the Greens mainly for its car washing services, but if they venture inside the main office they can now find a local artist and his work.
Upon arriving, customers will find friendly faces and Denny Haygood’s woodwork displayed at two locations in the room. They can stop by and purchase his unique signs that make for affordable gifts or charming home decor, with products ranging from $15 to $25.
His art is not limited to the many signs customers will find displayed, however. Haygood takes custom orders as well. Some of his larger projects have included hall trees, coat racks, farmhouse-style tables and buffets, benches, entertainment centers, six-foot cubbies, and stepstools. Prices for bigger orders average at $350 and take two to three weeks to finish.
Haygood uses reclaimed or used wood for most of his projects, creating a rustic look for his work that fits in well with any home.
Customers can now find special occasion signs, with recent themes around Mother’s and Father’s Day, at the front of the office. Haygood also makes sports-themed signs, welcome signs, and military-themed signs. He takes custom orders for signs as well.
One of Haygood’s recent projects included making a dollhouse for a friend’s daughter. He also makes 18-inch doll beds, making for a great gift.
Haygood recently started his woodworking business at the beginning of this year. “I’d go to arts and crafts shows and things like that and then I would always come in as a customer,” he said. He now partners with the owners of Car Wash On the Greens to display his work with an equal split in profit.
Haygood considered going to school to achieve an industrial arts degree at Indiana State University, but decided to go down a different path and worked for a major retailer for 41 years before retiring. “My passion’s always been industrial arts engineering and woodworking,” he said.
Customers can find Haygood at Car Wash On the Greens approximately once a week, but his display is there Monday through Saturday.
