The holidays can be steeped in many family tradi-tions, from sending holiday cards to going caroling, but one FishHawk fami-ly’s annual tradition is more work than play.
Darlene Chaberek and her family own Chaberek Family Christmas Trees, now in its eleventh year, selling premium quality Frasier firs from North Carolina.
“It’s become our favorite seasonal business,” said Chaberek, who also owns a stand that sells fireworks in June and July.
She sells approximately 1,100 trees each year, ranging in size from five to 12 ft. tall. Prices start at about 50 dollars.
FishHawk resident Shannon Sharesky and her family make a visit to the tree lot their own family tradition.
“My family looks forward to picking out our tree each year,” she said. “The trees are always the best quality and last from the day we buy it until we take it down after the first of the year.”
One reason why Chaberek trees last longer than others is because her farmer cuts the trees just before shipment.
“Our trees are cut and shipped Thanksgiving week and are delivered to us in a refrigerated truck to help keep them alive and fresh,” said Chaberek.
FishHawk resident Frances Clyde Chavez is impressed by the family’s commitment to give back to the community.
In addition to donating a portion of their proceeds to Newsome Athletic Booster Club and donating several trees to the school
and its teachers, the Chabereks give trees to families going through financial difficulties.
“Reach out to us on our Facebook page and message us if you know of a family in need,” she said.
Last year, she celebrated her birthday (December 17) by giving away five trees and then five more before Christmas Eve.
“Part of the fun of this business is being able to help families during this time of giving,” said Chaberek.
Hours of operation are 9 a.m. – 8 p.m. on the day after Thanksgiving
(opening day) then Monday – Friday 3:30 p.m. – 8 p.m., Saturday 9 a.m. – 8 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m. – 8 p.m.
“If you’re looking for the perfect tree for your home or business look no further because this is the place where you will find it,” said Chavez.
